One of the dreams of almost every parent is to see their kids successfully stand on stage with the crowd looking at them and recognizing their efforts once they are done. One of the best ways to do that is to get them involved in a high school musical, but not every child will be ready for it for different reasons. Your child could have trouble with stage fright, feel a bit embarrassed by the entire show or you may not even know about the program that the school is running. Some schools like the POWIS Malaysia have personnel that can help you right at the school, but there are some things that you can do right at home.
Get Them Interested
The first thing that you can do to get your child involved in a high school musical is to help them like musicals in the first place. By the time they reach high school age, kids will have a mindset of the music that they like. If they like youthful music, then help them discover the musicals that talk to the younger generations. Watching a musical like the Lion King or the Beauty and the Beast can help them enjoy musicals when they are older. If you did not have them listen to those when kids then other important musicals are also available for people of the younger generations with music and stories which they may find appealing and therefore may want to participate in them.
Tell Them The Story
While not every kid will feel up to reading Les Miserables or the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, those stories are still great today. Tell them the basics of the story so that they want to hear the music to it. Keep in mind that it is much easier to learn a song than it is to learn a full book or script. Play the music from the musicals in your home and then explain what is behind the songs. Always encourage the learning and the talents and show them that they do not need to be a soprano in order to participate. The part of Thernadier is much different than the one for Jean Valjean or Javert in Les Miserables.
Get Your School To Help
As soon as you know that the school is producing a musical, talk to the music teacher to help you. Schools like POWIIS High School Musical Malaysia have great programs that other schools imitate so they will focus on helping your child out of their shell for the high school musical (also read How to Stage a High School Musical). A music teacher is there because they love music and will be glad to promote it with their students. By working with these teachers you will be discovering talents that you child may not even realize that they had. Who knows? Perhaps these little steps that they are taking today will lead them to the stage to eventually sing “The Music of the Night” to audiences every night; but for now you will have the memories of the time they were on their high school’s stage.
