The Top Reasons Why Only 10% of Online Applicants Are Called Back For Interviews

Category: Career Path

Submitting an online resume is a normal practice nowadays because it saves the applicant and the employer a lot of time and resources. However, many jobseekers often don’t know how to make their online resumes look more attractive in the eyes of human resource (HR) managers. This is especially true in developing urban centers like Penang in Malaysia. If you are trying to search for job vacancies in Penang, you have to understand that the state’s economy relies largely on the industries of technology and banking. This is why the region is often referred to as the Silicon Valley of the East. To increase your chances of receiving a call for a follow-up interview, see to it that you don’t make the following mistakes:

  1. Bad formatting – This is more common than you think. Always keep in mind that you are not the only applicant. There are probably dozens or even hundreds of people vying for the same job. If you didn’t follow the standard application format, your resume will likely go to the garbage bin. If the employer doesn’t specify an application format, it’s always safer to follow the standard resume format.
  2. Too much information – You need to understand that hiring managers are often busy people. They don’t have the time to read very long applications. The general rule is that you should make your application three to four pages long. Only include the information that the hiring manager needs to decide if you are a worthy candidate for the vacant position. Don’t overwhelm him or her with unnecessary details.Don't put too much information in your resume while applying job in Penang
  3. Grammar and spelling errors – A single misspelled word can discourage a hiring manager. This is very important especially if you’re applying in an industry wherein being able to write flawlessly is a requirement. Your online application is only a few pages long so make it a point to go over it to ensure that there are no grammar and spelling errors.
  4. Not including a photo – This is a very simple rule but a lot of applicants still don’t follow it. Putting a photo in your application creates the impression that you are serious about the job. Furthermore, you should only use clear and professional-looking photos. Always remember that the photo will serve as your introduction to the company you want to work for.
  5. Using an inappropriate email address – If you put an email address in your application that says sexybabe@gmail.com, then the hiring manager will surely have doubts about you. That said, you should submit an email address that’s clean and neutral. Don’t use words that are too fancy.  Submit an email address that's clean and neutral to apply for job in Penang
  6. Including salary expectations in the application – This is a big no-no. You should never put in your resume and application the amount of salary that you want. You can negotiate about this matter when you are already called back for a follow-up interview.

The bottom line is that when you submit an online application, this doesn’t mean that you will be eligible for a follow-up interview. The hiring manager will look into the resumes submitted and decide which ones will be called back for job interviews. In short, your online application is the very first step in the hiring process. If your resume is either incomplete or sloppy, you won’t get the call back. That said, you should always make sure that you don’t commit the mistakes discussed above.
